A Bit About Me
Life, Faith, Ministry
After 30 years as an accredited Baptist Minister in the UK, I am now retired from pastoral ministry. I have a heart for mentoring and discipleship.
I am married to Alice, and we live in South Wales, in the UK. We have a daughter, son and daughter-in-law and 4 wonderful grandchildren.
A Bit About This Place
I think every one of us has some place we go to which is safe, secure, timeless; where we can just get away from it all and be! It’s that place we turn to when life becomes overwhelming, frustrating and maybe threatening. Or, it’s just a rubbish day with rubbish weather and a rubbish outlook and you just need that ‘place.’
Do you have a place where you turn for refuge?
Whenever you read or hear of a ‘Place of Refuge’, remember it’s a reminder to you that life is precious.
In Hebrews 6, we have the idea of refuge. The text says: “we have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us” (Hebrews 6:16).
We are told that our place of refuge is in Jesus Christ. It is through Him alone that we find refuge from the trials of life and sting of death.
These places of refuge are for outsiders wanting to become insiders and be safe. It’s that place you could really be yourself; dream; think; cry. God longs to be that place of refuge. He doesn’t want us to run from life and end up existing, He wants us to run to life.
“One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!’” (Psalm 91:1-2).
It’s a delight for me to be sharing some thoughts with you through my blog! This has come about from seeking God’s heart and trying to understand a little more of what He has planned now that Alice and I have stepped away from pastoral ministry.
So, come with me to this place of refuge and sit a while!
I feel we are embarking on a journey where God is again changing our identity. I have said many times that when God wants to change our behaviour, He first transforms our identity.
“To be in Christ is the most basic identity of a Christian, so much so that all other answers to the question, ‘Who am I?’ are based on or drawn from that identity.”- Jerry Bridges.
Without a doubt, change challenges our sense of identity. We have to let go of old ways of defining ourselves, whether they are connected to our relationships, our roles, or indeed our calling.
Before you begin to query what I’m saying, I have to make it clear: your/my identity in Christ is unshakeable – as Christians we are and will always be God’s beloved children. But we are on a spiritual journey, on a road full of spiritual wealth and wonders! I truly hope we discover these as we explore His word and discover its many vistas along the way!
