"Great is His Faithfulness."

Remember, this series is about ‘knowing God better.’

Paul’s prayer from Ephesians 1:17 is, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

One of the things we need to know refers to the steadfast faithfulness of God and how it should impact our lives on a daily basis.

The Psalm is full of the faithfulness of God. If you read the whole Psalm you will have read ‘faithful’ ten times! God’s reliability is a fundamental and inseparable part of His very being.

Note verse 8, “O Lord God Almighty, who is like You? You are mighty, O Lord, and Your faithfulness surrounds You.”

The Hebrew word used here for faithfulness means it encompasses all of God’s actions. He will always be firm, sure, reliable, and stable. There’s no hiddenness here. It’s a real reality. And it brings such assurance to our lives.

This revelation of the character of God encourages us to know what a remarkable God we have, especially in times of trouble.

Can I encourage you to stop and listen to this song.

Psalm 89 speaks of our faithful God being the same forever.

Indeed, “forever” is a word frequently used in this psalm (nine times). It's so wonderful to know that regardless of how we may feel, God remains the same. God is always, absolutely, amazingly faithful. Which means He’s reliable, trustworthy, and unchanging.

I love the story of a young man that walked into a photography studio with a framed picture of his girlfriend. He wanted the picture duplicated. This involved removing it from the frame. In doing this, the studio owner noticed the inscription on the back of the photograph: "My dearest Tom, I love you with all my heart. I love you more and more each day. I will love you forever and ever. I am yours for all eternity." It was signed "Diane." To the studio owner's amazement there was a P.S.: "If we ever break up, I want this picture back."

How glorious to know, God never puts a P.S. on His commitment to us.

We who know Christ as Saviour can be confident that His compassions will never fail, that He will be faithful to us to the end.

I chose a song last week by Robert Critchley, ‘What a faithful God’.

This powerful song tells us we can come at any time and truly know and experience the faithfulness of our Father God.

"Lord I come before your throne of grace; I find rest in Your presence, and fullness of joy. In worship and wonder I behold Your face, singing what a faithful God have I, faithful in every way."

Faithfulness is not only an attribute of God’s character, but the Psalm states it ‘surrounds’ Him. This means you can’t but experience His faithfulness even as you come into His presence. He is absolutely secure and steadfast. He literally “surrounds” you and I when we place our faith in Him. No matter what, He promises never to leave or forsake us (Heb 13:5). The Hebrew word for ‘surround’ means 'from every side'.

I thank God for His faithfulness to me. Though I have faltered often in my walk of faith and messed up so many times, God has always been faithful. I find it interesting that even in the face of all my unfaithfulness, I see my Father God’s faithfulness unaltered, unchanged and unmoved. “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself”  (2 Tim 2:13).

In 1346, during the Hundred Years’ War, the English army of King Edward III met a French battalion. The King’s Son, Prince Edward, led one division of the British army while Edward III stood nearby with another division of soldiers, ready to send relief if he saw the need. Soon after the battle started the prince thought he was in danger, so he sent for help. But the king didn’t come. So young Edward sent another message, pleading for immediate assistance. His father responded by telling the courier, “Go tell my son that I am not so inexperienced a commander as not to know when help is needed, nor so careless a father as not to send it.”

And so it is with our Father God. When we are tempted, troubled, torn down, God is faithful. He knows exactly when, where, and what to send as help in every situation. The thing is, God will always provide a way, even when there seems to be no way.

Think about it: God’s loyalty and faithfulness to us is independent of our loyalty and faithfulness to Him. He doesn’t base His love and dependability (or our salvation) on our grand performance. He decides out of His total freedom to faithfully stand with us, because that’s the way He is.

A.W. Tozer said, “When our Lord looked at us, He saw not only what we were. He was faithful in seeing what we could become! He took away the curse of being and gave us the glorious blessing of becoming.”

The faithfulness of God to His purposes and his people is expressed in Romans 8:32, which says, "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"

J Beeke and P Smalley say, “God’s faithfulness is His reliability in doing what He has promised… Therefore, God’s faithfulness means that he is completely worthy of our faith.”

God’s faithfulness is extensive. He’s established faithfulness in heaven itself." - Psalm 89:2.

Do you know what this means? You can’t outstretch it!

God’s faithfulness is everlasting. His “faithfulness surrounds Him” - Psalm 89:8.

Do you know what this means? You can’t outlive it!

God’s faithfulness is exceptional. It's “like the moon, the faithful witness  - Psalm 89:37.

Do you know what this means? You can’t outmatch it!

God’s faithfulness is one of the single most important facts of Christianity; it’s the foundation upon which everything about Christianity is built. Why? If God is not faithful, then there is nothing to live for, and nothing to hope for. There is no middle ground. God must be 100% faithful, or not at all.

A.W. Pink wrote, "He never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. To every declaration of promise or prophecy the Lord has exactly adhered, every engagement of covenant or threatening He will make good.”

Please remember, all that Father God has revealed to us in His Word can be trusted. The Bible supplies us with reliable and dependable information that corresponds exactly to all that He is! Isn't this amazing?

His faithfulness assures our salvation.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass

Our Father wants us to be very sure that.

Psalm 12:6: “The words of the Lord are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times”.

Hebrews 10:23: "He who promised is faithful".

God wants us to be confident that His promises can’t fail, and will never disappoint.

Need God’s faithfulness today?

We can share the hope of Philippians 1:6, "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

We cannot talk about ‘knowing God better’ without coming to terms with this truth: How great is His faithfulness! This will sustain us when all other props are gone.

His faithfulness will never ever come to an end. Hallelujah!

 "Great is His faithfulness."
