Knowing God is Faithful!

We are continuing our series of ‘Knowing God better!’

J. I. Packer writes, “He does not gain new powers nor lose those that he once had. He does not mature or develop. He does not get stronger, or weaker, or wiser, as time goes by...He never becomes less truthful, or merciful, or just, or good than he used to be. The character of God is today and always will be, exactly what it was in Bible times.”

How many people do you know who do exactly what they say? Before you answer, let me clarify! How many do you know who do exactly what they say every single time? Hold on! I mean they do exactly what they say every single time and do it with such thoroughness and perfection that you never have to worry about anything they say or do? Wait! How many people do you know who, no matter what the circumstances and no matter how they feel, will always do exactly what they say every single time and do it with such thoroughness and perfection you never have to worry about anything, you know if they say it, they will definitely do it without fail, without excuse?

God's faithfulness means that everything he says and does is certain. He is 100% reliable 100% of the time. He does not fail, forget, falter, change or disappoint.


We need a fresh revelation of God’s faithfulness. 



The Hebrew word for ‘faithfulness’ is linked to the word ‘Amen’, depicting certainty and truth. It’s root verb means to confirm and support. This can refer to the secure and strong hands of a parent carrying their child. What a picture of God!

In fact, God reveals Himself to us as “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (see Ex 34:5-6, NIV). Faithfulness is a quality He ‘abounds’ in.

J. I. Packer went onto say, “Your God is faithful to you, and adequate for you. You will never need more than He can supply, and what He supplies, both materially and spiritually, will always be enough.”

Hallelujah! What a faithful God we have!

It's staggering that living in an unfaithful world, living around unfaithful people, and when we look at the unfaithfulness in our own heart, to realise that there is One who is absolutely faithful!

2 Timothy 2:13 states: "If we are faithless, in other words, if we are unfaithful, God will remain faithful, he cannot disown himself".  

This quality is essential to His being; without it He would not be God. To be unfaithful would be to act contrary to His nature.

Faithfulness is God's attribute of utter dependability. 

A.W. Tozer wrote: “Upon God’s faithfulness rests our whole hope of future blessings.” 

When I look back on my life, I confess that there were times when I doubted the faithfulness of God. By the time I was thirteen both my parents had died. When I was a project manager for John Laing Construction, I had serious issues on my sites and I ended up asking God why? In ministry, coming alongside families, couples, individuals going through such agonising pain and pressure, on such occasions I sometimes doubted God’s faithfulness because He hadn’t turned up or indeed answered my prayer as I wanted Him to! Yet in retrospect, I can see God was faithful even when I was not. 

James Edwards says, “The God of the Bible is not the product of human imagination and His nature is not changed by our opinion of Him. So, it really doesn't matter very much what kind of God we would like to believe in. He is everything and more besides.”

Let me encourage you today: God is faithful.

This is great news in a world full of unfaithfulness. Don’t ever doubt that God is who He says He is. Don’t lose this glorious fact but celebrate it!


The Bible tells us over and again that God is faithful. 

Exodus 34:6, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness…

Psalm 100:5, “…his faithfulness continues through all generations.” and

Psalm 117:2, "…the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever."


Nature of God’s Faithfulness

None of God’s attributes can ever contradict any other attribute, but all harmonise perfectly with each other. Since He is perfect and unchangeable, He can never cease to be what He is.

The faithfulness of God is always seen in that God is true to His character.

Faithfulness is at the heart of all that God is and does. His truthfulness, holiness, love, wisdom, righteousness, and other attributes ensure this. He is incapable of being otherwise. Everything about Him is true.

One of the most powerful words to describe God’s character is the Hebrew word “hesed.” It is usually translated “steadfast love.”

'Hesed' is defined as loyalty, steadfast love, kindness, faithfulness. The core idea of this term relates to loyalty within a relationship. 

One of the first things Moses did when the Jews reached the point of entering the Promised Land, after years of wondering around the wilderness, was to remind them of the faithfulness of God: 

In Deuteronomy 7:9 we read, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” 

This is one of many verses which connect God’s faithfulness to His loving kindness.

Jeremiah found the same amidst the ruins of a city and a nation because of their gross unfaithfulness, yet God remained faithful. Lamentations 3:22-23 reads, “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” 


Don’t you find this absolutely amazing? Wherever there are signs of unfaithfulness, God remains faithful. His compassions never fail, in fact they are new every morning. What great faithfulness! What good news today!

Jeremiah in the darkest moment, remembers the goodness of God. This teaches us something very powerful: that God’s mercy is not dependent on our circumstances. His compassion is constant; indeed, it is renewed every morning. This is so important in ‘knowing God better.’ 


It’s a wonderful reminder that God's mercies are not a one-time event but are renewed, offering us a fresh new start each day. Receiving such each morning (today) should lead to deep gratitude and thanksgiving to God.

Look at it another way. How many of us have woken up to face yet again a struggle in relationships, or some conflict in work, a fear of that meeting? Or, it may be that mistake you made stills niggles you to the point you feel pain. Listen, “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”  New mercies for new burdens – hallelujah!


God always does what He says. He is faithful to His Word.


Stop and ponder on this for a moment

Joshua 23:14: "You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed." 

"Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed." 


I have found this to be so true during some of the deepest moments of despair in my life. I remember being rushed into hospital and diagnosed with double pneumonia; I was physically and mentally shattered, and with tears I just cried out to God. In that moment I was suddenly moved within my heart, sensing God was with me and I heard Him say, ‘I love you, you are mine!’ In that moment, like the Psalmist, I knew I was loved beyond measure and that everything would be okay!


Psalm 143:8: "Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul."

John MacArthur once said, “We are God created, God loved, God saved, God Fathered, God controlled, God sustained, God filled, and God blessed. We are one people under one sovereign (over all), omnipotent (through all), and omnipresent (in all) God.”

Prayer

"Your sameness is not the sameness of a rock, but the sameness of a faithful lover. Out of your love I came to life, by your love I am sustained, and to your love I am always called back. There are days of sadness and days of joy; there are feelings of guilt and feelings of gratitude; there are moments of failure and moments of success; but all of them are embraced by your unwavering love." Henri Nouwen


Take a moment to reflect on the faithfulness of God in your own life and worship Him.
